Motivation(by Sundar Pichai)

Motivation directs performance towards particular goals. Motivation determines the precise goals toward which learners endeavour.

Thus, it affects the choices students build—for example, whether to register in physics or studio art, whether to spend an evening completing a demanding homework assignment or playing videogames with friends.

Motivation leads to amplified endeavour and force. Motivation increases the amount of effort and energy that learners spend in activities directly associated to their wants and goals. It determines whether they chase a task passionately and sincerely or indifferently and unwillingly.

To many, success seems to come suddenly. When you observe others and what they have achieved you usually don’t be grateful for what it has taken for them to get where they are. Eventually, in failing to do this you also fail to learn what it would take for you to achieve the same level of accomplishment and success.

But, if you take the time to truly believe about it, you will find that victory is typically only a minor step away. Yet in spite of that it eludes most people. It is always so near and yet so far.

Let me exemplify what I mean with a short video of the Google CEO, Sundar Pichai addressing the students at IIT Kharagpur.

In the video, he talks about how being different is important. The speech given by the Google CEO is a must for every student to go through.

He shares his experiences and how his motivation helped him grow closer to his dreams.

Admitting that he used to bunk classes during his engineering days at IIT Kharagpur, Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Thursday expressed disclosure to find young IITians aiming to get into IIMs even as he strained on the significance of getting real world experience.

Here are few excerpts from the video.

“There is a lot of stress to pursue a set of rules all the way through your career (in India). When you are in high school you think of college. I get very surprised that people get into the IITs and instantly they are idealising about IIMs and so on. It is so imperative to get real world experience,” Pichai said at an interactive session with IITians here today. Back to the campus 23 years after finishing B.Tech in 1993, he said students expend a lot of time on books and learning academically. On a nostalgic trip to revive his campus days, he went to his hostel room, met teachers and interacted with students.

“Of course,” was his reply when asked whether he bunked classes. “We used to stay up late at night and in the morning missed classes,” he recalled. Pichai said he gets stunned on learning that some eighth-grade students have started preparing for IITs. “During my time, lot of folks said this person won’t get into this college and that’s the end of the road for him,” he recalled.

He advised students of his alma mater to try out diverse things, take risks, be well-rounded and pursue their passion. India, however, he said, has a strong base in education as parents speak about it all the time. In America, Pichai said, at Stanford for example, students opt for majors only when they are in their last year. After finishing his B.Tech in metallurgical and materials engineering from IIT, Pichai did his M.S. in Engineering and Materials Science from Stanford University and an MBA from the Wharton School and joined Google in 2004.

Pichai wants students to not imprison themselves to books and academics only. “Academics is vital but not as vital as it is made out to be,” he said. “There is strain to chase set lanes. Yet, it is essential to get real-world experiences. I would like to see people take risks, value creativity and seek different things,” he said.
